A PIECE OF ART

INKED : Beautiful lines intricately drawn upon my skin each marking out the story I wish to tell.
Ecthes upon my flesh as smooth as felt
Contain the bleeding ink that is timeless
Living through any storm.
Unique to me and unable to confirm.
Each line delicately displaying each vision of strenght that remained unscathed.
Each one given its own name,
In memory of love or in memory of pain.
Each a reminder of how I overcame
Again and again……

BENEATH THE SUN

There was something about the morning sunrise that felt freeing. Although she had no experience of servitude Desire felt as if she had been held in captivity for her entire fifteen years of living. Wednesday morning was just like every other morning as she stuck rigid to routine and crept out of the back door, past the hog pen and out onto the dusty red lane. It was still dark outside but if she squinted hard enough she could just about see a ripple of the sea to her left and to her right the road that lead to the rest of the country she had been born in but never travelled. Grains of red dirt lathered her leather shoes covering them in a smooth red coat of dust that she would defiantly have to remove before school but this was worth the extra task. Halting just before the road turned to sand she removed her shoes and tied the two laces together, her toes wriggled in the sand as she stepped out the golden carpet hanging her shoes round her neck she strolled down the beach past the fish shack and up the small sand dune before resting on top. Within minutes the dark shade of night dissolved into and array of colours she could not name, as night turned to day her lips curled exposing her teeth to the the beauty of God. A mom All too soon nature had begun its morning song, animals stirred in their pens and not so far in the distance she heard a cockerel crow. Hurriedly she rose with one last look at the sun and a wish she only uttered to the moonlight. “One day.” She said with hope .”I will leave this land and explore the finer things in life.” .

MOTHER LAND Part 2

It had been four summers and four birthdays since Desire had hatched her fairytale life out of the rumbles of red rock and everything had gone into high drive. The old beach hotel had been taken over by the Edgar family, a well to do white family from the cold streets of England. John Edgar was a heavy set man with a full white beard fattened with the finest meats. Bestie Edgar had married well although she too came from wealth she had been born on the island and was more accustmed to the ways of the people. Bestir had insisting on rerurning to her home lnd and erting her english children get feel for the island before the natives had ruined what was left of its beauty. Thier first born Jane had reserved herself to learning how to become a good wife and proper lady but John Edgar junior had taken to the land like a fish to water. Nothing had prepared him for the brown girl with copper colur hair and nine freckled placed spaciously across her nose. The breath she had stolen from him had never returned.

Once the hotel had be restored tourist trickled through the small comunity slowly increasing each year. At the edge of the land and beautiful view of the islands end The Edgar Family settled easily. The first whiff of Desire in the morning heat had tickled her pink and began a campaign of hatred so raw the compositions of buildings were affected. Desire had no qualms being the object of Besties Edgars disgust, she was going to marry John Edgar the second even if it killed her. It was such morning she walked the half a mile path to the Edgars verenda her news swirling inside her tummy. Bestie Edgar true to form turned her nose up to the air and tutted at the sight of Desire strolled up her path.

“Why must John insist on playing with the natives.” She remarked spitefully.

“Mama.” Jane interjected “Desire is like family.”

Bestie Edgar coughed hard. “Jane you and your brother are wildly accepting I mean, honestly are the animals are family too.” She chuckled.

Drumming up the courage Jane thought carefully anout her question before she asked her mother bravely.

“Mama why do you hate her so?” Jane asked thoughtfully.

“John deserves a Lady not a maid.”

“Mama Desire is not a Maid, she went to university an studied hard.”

“I bet some foolish man paid for her education.”

“Mama I can never understand whh you would come back home to isolation. People like Desire have hopes for a better a future.”

Bestie clasped her chest in shock.” I am not isolated. Desire is only after money and your brothers has falling head first for a demon.”

“Mama Desire loves John, he loves her isnt that all that matters.”

“Life is no fairytale Jane. Desire is a black woman incase you forgot.”

Jane pursed her lips and kept her next thought to herself. After all she would have never known if she hadn’t been snooping. If her mother was oblivious to the facts she would play along respectfully.

“Jane, what do you think of the island?.”

“I think its beautiful mama, magestic even. ”

Bestie laughed for the first time in weeks. ” I use to watch the water for boats, there was something about the sea.”

“I thought you grew up in the town.”

“I did.” Bestie replied quickly. ” but we use to come here often when we were children.”

“We!”

“Oh Jane, tnose days are long gone.” Bestie deflective.

Clearing her throat softly Desire announced her presence.

“Good afternoon Mrs Edgar is John available?”

“Not for the likes of you.” Mrs Edgar snapped.

“Mother apologise to Desire.” John snapped, his brows burrowed together as he frowned deeply.

Keeping her eyes firmly on the prize she stared at Desire, a sharp line where her lips should have been.

“I shall do no such thing!” She retorted. “This ‘gyal’ should know her place. I’ve put up with your little hobby for long enough its time you found a proper wife and stopped playing with the help.”she finished with a touch of venom.

Janes eyes darted from her mother to her brother awaiting his response. Passing his mother John Edgar junior took a stand beside his woman and faced his mother head on.

Smiling warmly he clasped her trembling hand and squeezed “Desire and I are to be married.” He revealed proudly.

Bestie stood abruptly “Over my dead body she screeched. “This has gone far enough.”

“So be it.”he replied. “Desire is with child and I love her.”

“It must be the sun.” Bestie whined. “No there is more to this!” Shaking her head she stepped towards Desire her hands raised. “You, you put voodo on my son. Yuh cast spell pon him.” Clasping her mouth before more of her mother tongue spilled out uncontrollably she backed up into the door frame.

Closing her eyes she inhaled and exhaled rapidly, Desire was everything she despised; her fake air and graces, her humble beginnings , her honey brown skin it was all the empitome of suffering. Tears rolled from her eyes as she shook angrily. Rising to comfort her mother Jane tried to calm her queitly.

“Desire is pregnant there is nothinh you can do about it, as soon as we are married we shall leave for England.”

Besties face changed color raidly as she processed her living nightmare. “Your father will not agree with this.”

“He has my blessing.” John Edgar Senoir annouced behind her.

Smiling sweetly Desire stepped forward. ” Should I call you Mother?” She asked innocently.

Falling freely Bestie landed in her husbands arms unconsciously the screams only existing her head.

THE MOTHER LAND Pt 1

There was something about the morning sunrise that felt freeing. Although she had no experience of servitude Desire felt as if she had been held in captivity all of her 15 years. Every morning she crept out of the back door, past the hog pen and out onto the dusty red lane. If she stood right there she could see the sea to her left and the road to the rest of the country she had been born in never travelled to her right.

Grains of red dirt lathered her leather shoes in a smooth red coat of dust that she would definatly have to remove before school but this was worth the extra task. Just before the road turned to sand she removed her shoes and tied the two laces together and hung them from her neck before stepping into the golden sand.

Within minutes the dark shades slowly dissovled watching as night turned to day she smiled admiring the beauty of God. Nature begun its morning song and the animals stirred in the pens across the lands. Far away a cockrel crowed signalling her time for departure. Sadly she gathered a palm full of sand and let it flow through her fingers

“One day.” She said with hope .” I will leave this land and walk amongst the richest gentry and fine ladies. They will call me Lady Desire and I shall have women who tend to my every need.” She gighled childishly as she imagined herself inside a fine house adorned in fine threads.

“How will you do that?” Thaddues sniggered.

Looking up at her interuption she frown deeply. In all the years she had been alive Thaddues had found some pleasure in reminding her that life wasn’t the fairytale she imagined.

“Why do you inist on creeping up on people Thaddues” she scolded. “I’m sure Miss Anderson has work for you to do.”

Grinning foolishly Thaddues wagged his finger in her direction and laughed. ” you dont worry about Mrs Anderson this is the fifth time Ive been removed from duty to find you.”

“Nobody asked you.”

“Well if your mother is nobody then I guess nobody did.”

Thaddues watched as her eyes slanted and her tan brown skin flushed red and rejoiced inwardly.

“Dont be smart it doesn’t fit a dummy like you.” She spat. “Soon I will leave this captured land and I will be courting with the Queen.”

Tutting Thaddues smiled “Your high dreams and ugly nature will only bring you misery you wait and see.” Kissing his teeth long and hard he kicked his feet in the sand as he cursed all the way back to dry land.

Thaddues Brown was two years older than her but not as smart. For the past year he worked at Mrs Andersons brown house as a helper. Mama Rose, Thaddues mother, had nine kids to feed and four goats not yet ready for their purpose. Thaddues was the eldest child and Mama Rose at least worked hard to send the three eldest to school while the others waited to learn from them but the school had done all they could. ‘Sone pickney just nuh book worthy” the teacher had offered and Mama Rose took that to the nearest work vacancy and pushed Thaddues into the world of work. All their fathers had left Thaddues was the only one they had ever know. Little Kevin wad happy now he was going to school and Thaddues felt like a man.

Years ago, his face had been the sun and his words as sweet as honey but the older they got and the more proverty she saw the less of a catch Thaddues seemed. Although, he was still handsome his prospects were as dim as his brain and there was no way she would end up bare foot and ‘bruk’ like Mama Rose. Rising she dusted the sand from her sun dress and begun the short walk home, Papa had left for sea earlier and Mama would just be stirring a hot pot of cornmeal porridge. Passing the old hotel she notice the sale sign had dissappeared and wondered who had brought the old building and would they have a family. Passing four more houses she opened the gate at the fifth and side stepped the old mongrel grazing in the morning heat.

“Morning Mama.”

Junnie pushed the wood into the fire and continued to stir.

“I said morning Mama.”

“Me hear yuh.” Junnie snapped, placing the lid on the pot she rose and placed her hand on her hips. “T’ree marning straight I wake an yuh nuh dehyah.”

“I was at the beach Mama.” Desire whined.

“I know I sent Thaddues to fine yuh.” Sighing wearily Junnie hobbled over to the steps and sat down. “Mi to old fi chase yuh Desire but I want you to know what ever sweet nanny goat run him belly.”

Desire frowned deeply trying to process her mothers parable with little understanding.

“Go get ready for school, with all your foriegn dream I sure of one t’ing foriegn don’t want no dunce.”

Skipping indoors Desire traded her sun dress for her freshly starch uniform and rubbed her shoe vigoirously until they shined like new. Brushing her hair into a neat bun she placed her sun hat atop her head and admired her reflection. Only she wasn’t wearing her uniform she was dressed in lace and covered in pearls.

“Stop idle and move.” Junnie scolded

“Yes Mama.”

A hot bowl of porridge and fresh cocoa tea later she began her walk to school. The three miles it took was shorter with company, but she was late. Every morning she prided herslef on being ready and prepared for the term. School was her way out of this small island, she had bigger ideas and greater plans. Very few people from her parish could go to school so her high fourrune was and elevation she readly excepted without grace. Many of the children hated her and favoured her brother more but she didn’t let that bother her. Wesley was a no hoper with no ambition who wanted to follow in their fathers footsteps. The idea of being like her mother appalled her. Spotting her friends Nancy Clarke and Romaine Dawson not too far ahead she sped up her pace.

“Wait for me nuh.”

After a few yells she finally got their attention and caught up.

“Your late.”

“Thank you Nancy.” Desire replied.

“Easy Nancy we only just reach.” Romaine offered in peace before all three burst into laughter. ” Nancy deciede she wants to go to America, did you pick?”

Clasping her hands together Desire grinned broadly “As soon as I can afford it I will be leaving Jamaica.” Desire announced proudly. ” and heading for England.”

WILDFLOWER..PART 3

.
The success of dinner had eased the nagging sense of dread everytime he thought of Lilly , yet he still could not comprehend the fact that she had hiddwn his child from him for so long. Milly had been with child on their wedding day and event that would never had happened if Lilly had annouced her own. Even now he could remember his mothers disgust at his poor taste in women.
“Those people have no class Jasper, they inherited that property from The Rulers. They are of no blue blood. I will not condone this at all.” She said.
He could remember it like yesterday, the way Lilly had shrunk in size, tears falling from her face as she stood in the doorway while he said nothing.
That was the last time he laid eyes on her and last time he revealed in his wealth.
“Seriously Jasper.” Milly snapped, interupting his thoughts. ” You are so dostracted lately.”
Pulling her upon his lap he kissed her cheeks until she giggled. “Now thats more like it.” She sighed. “Jasper I was wondering if we should invite Jazz over to keep Milly company she is so lonely since the move here and school doesn’t start for another three weeks.” She tutted. ” Why she has to go to public school I have to idea.”
“We can’t just choose her friends for her and the idea of my children growing up pompous and self entitled is not pleasing. How will they know what is expected of them if its already done for them.”
Milly frowned. ” if i didn’t know better I think you were a poor man.”
Jasper laughed as she and rose from his lap. “Seriously Jasper, Jazz seems like a nice girl, we’re in the middle of nowhere for christsake.”
Jasper winced at her whining tone. “Ok Milly as you please but if it all goes sour you only have yourself to blame.”
Milly clapped gleefully rushing to tell her daughter the news. Looking out the huge bay window he could see the house in the distance, below he spotted a head of hair running across the field and his chest tightened. Life could have been so different. .

WILDFLOWER….PART 2

It had been weeks since he had seen Lily but tonight he might have to face the inevitable. Milly had decided that a social gathering of the neighbours was the best way to introduce themselves back into his old neighbourhood reguardless if he knew half the block, she did not.
The table had been set and the food laid out in a beautiful array of silver trays ranging in sizes. Milly had gone to great lenghts to impress the families of the nieghbouring houses and here he was suited and booted with a smile to greet his guest, yet inside he was tormented. After all these years the sight of Lilly had evoked childhood memories, ignited a flame that hadn’t died and he felt the burn deep in his chest. “Jasper.” Waving frantically Milly shook her head. ” I do apologise my husband is not usually away with the fairies. What did you say your name was again?”
“Frank Jones.” Jasper offered
Frank smile broadly a low rumbling laugh shaking his beer gut protuding before him before extending a hand. “One and only.”
“Welcome to my home.”
Bella guided Frank to his seat while the hosts remained in position. Looking over the head of the fifth guest he sighed deeply.
Grabbing her husbands hand Milly pulled him close. “Not to long now, first we christen this house with good company and the finest food then, we can christen the bedroom.” .
Nodding he smiled warmly before returning his gaze to the door but the door was no longer in his vision standing before him in a ruby red gown and her hair flowing down her back he could have swore Lilly’s eyes twinkled.
“Hunny this is Lilly she lives right next door.”
His palms sweated and his heart pounded
Stepping forward Lilly shook his limp hand and said “Nice to meet you Jasper, this is my daughter Jazz!”
There she was again the vision of his nightmare, a being he had created without his knowledge.
Turning on his heels he called for Bella. “Time to eat.”
“So sorry, I do not know what has gotten into my husband lately. It must be the move.”

WILDFLOWER…..PART 1

.
The house stood behind the shrubbery completely shaded from the world, but she knew it was there. The tall pillars and large verenda had decayed over the years and strips of paint had begun peeling on her last visit. Strolling down the beaten path her palm grazed the blades of grass leaving them dancing behind her. It had been a long time since she had walked this way and she intended to drink every bit of the scenery for future thirst.
Her heart lived her on this land and even though Jasper had long gone only his memories exsisted in the fields; their first kiss, there first fumble and the day she would never forget. Moving through the shubberry she stepped into a time warp. Gone was the peeling paint and the vision of decay. Bees buzzed from flower to flower and birds chirpped lively. The grass had been mowed and men moved furniture from a loaded van.
Her heart sunk at the thought of her memories being replaced by others. Little did she know that the truth would free her from the heavy burderns of the past.
Jasper junior spotted the lady before she saw him, strolling towards her his hand outstreched from a handshake he greeted her warmly. “Hello, can I help you?” Taking his hand she shook her head. “Sorry I grew up here, I was just taking a walk down…..” “Memory Lane.” Jasper Senior interjected ” Madeline Rose, how good it is to see you.” There he was dark and handsome with a speckle of grey in his crown.
“Junior go and help your mother with the furniture.” Never taking his eyes off her he stepped forward confidently. ” It’s been a long time!” There were words she wanted to say but she couldn’t remember them under his glare. A rustling sound drew there attention as a young girl burst through the shrubbery her hair wild and unkempt.. “Mum why do we always have……” stopping mid sentence Jazz stared at the stranger beside her mother. “Dad.” Jazz squealed
Jasper looked down and frowned. “You must be mistaken!” He responded mortified.
To be continued.

HIS BONNIE HER CLYDE : PT2

Clyde dropped her bag on the floor and ruffled her hair, a twelve hour shift had sunken her feet so far into the ground she was walking like a penguin. Pulling open her wardrobe she removed her grey fluffy bath robe with the hood and proceeded to the bathroom in need of water. The water swallowed her like the whale did Jonah, the days work rinsed from her skin she covered her nakeness and padded acroos the floor to her disguarded bag. Scrambling through the contents she pushed aside the old letters and spotting her phone at the bottom.

Scanning thrpugh the message she read Bonnies message twice.

“She is not serious!” She remarked in the empty room.

Pressing call she crossed her legs and listened to the persistant ring tone.

“Hello, you need to get here now!”

Six months she had been exclusively dating Shaun and suddenly Bonnie turns up out of the blue to rock her whole world. College was a far cry from the real world and bills but Bonie brought her back to a time she hadn’t forgotten. Shaun was on the verge of propsing and she was on the verge of slipping benwath the sheets with an ex he had no idea about. Sbaun Hunter wasn’t no ordinary man, he had reputation to upkeep and she had to live up to his requirements if she wanted to becone Mrs Hunter. But here was Bonnie with her carefree attitude and insatiable desire -Fuck you Bonnie.

*

Bonnie pressed the buzzer and waited for the click, pushing open the door she stepped into the building foyer and pressed the lift button. Inside the lift she tapped her foot impatiently counting down the floors until the lift shuttled to a stop. The doors open and Clyde stood akimbo with a scowl on her face.

“Now that is a welcome!” Bonnie laughed.

“What the fuck you playing at?” Clyde hissed.

Stepping out into the hallway Bonnie smile. “Hey beautiful.”

“Don’t beautiful me Bonnie, I told you I’m not interested in your little scheme.” Clyde snapped. “Why can’t you just leave me alone?”

Bonnie winced. ” Look can we go inside.”

Crossing her arms defiantly Clyde stood stationery, reaching out Bonnie gripped her wrist and pulled her close feeling the warmth of her breath upon her skin. Leaning close she let her lips graze her neck feeling her weakening Bonnie smiled.

“Lets go inside.”

“After you” Clyde snapped before looking down the hallway left and right.

Entering the apartment she stepped through the scent of Sarah Jessica Parker Lovely and slammed the door shut.

“You are crazy, do you even know what your doing with your life.”

Bonnie lifted the corner of the throw on the sofa before releasing it absently.

“You see Clyde the difference between me and you is thay I live in my truth.” Bonnie replied slowly. ” Dezzy excepts me for who I am but will the Pastor except his First Lady and all her desires.”

“Your a devil do you know that Bonjie. Everytime I get mh life together her you cone to fhck it up.”

Bonnies smile and Clyde resosted the urge to harm her.

“I dont make choices for you Clyde, I give you options.”

“Options that please you and leave me on the sidelines like unwantdd trash. No thanks. I found a man that loves me and I wont allow you and your latest conquest to fuck it up.”

Bonnie shook her head and unzipped her long black jacket. ” We were meant to be together Clyde. You know and I know it.”

Clyde lowered her gaze her flushed cheeks already exposing her bashfulness.

” I’m getting married.”

“I’m married.”

Crossing the distance between them in a breath and a heart beat Bonnie stood before her, breathless she tried to breathe.

“Tell me to leave and I will leave.”

Clyde opened her mouth but the sound of metal twisting and keys jangling turned the room black.

MEMORIES IN THE WIND

B R E E Z E
.
We met through destiny
At a time that was meant to be.
Speechless I stared all the same
Even though I didnt know your name.
You held my gaze with intensity
Shocking my body with electricity.
Unsure of this unusual emotion encompassing my globe
Every thing moving in slow mo, for a moment it was just you an I alone.
Stolen Kisses beneath the stars, sweet whispers in the breeze
Boundless Love that could bring the strongest to their knees.
Together our Youthful dreams focused on the never
Not the memories that would last forever.
A scars exsist where my heart rest stretching deep beyond flesh
Painless and a part of me
Capturing every scene
Replaying in HD
I swear sometimes I still hear our sweet whispers in the breeze.
