100 WORDS AND MORE: STORY TIME

JADE: She had failed. The purple stain beneath her eye, the ten matching dots around her neck was proof she had failed. It had all happen so fast, her gun in Wesley chest, his fist in her face and the sound of gunshots ripping through the industrial estate he owned. Trembling beneath the shelter of a table she waited for the silence to swallow the ricohieting bullets. Wesleys’ lifeless hand hung from the table his life source dripping from his palm into a puddle before her as she held her breath.
A sharp snap, a loud clank and the silence grew thick, the inside of her mouth drying then the desert as she listening for any signs if movement. Uncertainty stabbed at her chest as she crawled out from beneath her wooden protector standing with caution. “Hands up.” A gruff voice ordered.
“Shit.” She cursed.
“Now!”
As instructed she raised her hands above her head and prayed to a God she had never served. “Now turn, slowly!”
One foot in front of the other she manouvered with her eyes shut tight to scared to stare death in the face. “Just kill me” she spluttered without conviction.
“Now, now darling why would he do that.”
Every muscle in her body relaxed, her eyes fluttering open as she clasped eyes upon her mother. “Get yourself together! We need to be home for dinner otherwise your father will start asking questions.” Shaking her head in disappointment her mother frowned deeply. “Darling you must stop playing with your target’s. It’s bad for business and it’s messy.” She said with a wave.

STORY TIME

WHEN KISSES AINT ENOUGH: Samuels’ face said it all! The shifty glance, the snarl forming across his lips as I laid my discoveries on the table. There was no turning back, the locks had been broken and a bird had been released.
Pushing the paperwork away with the tip of his fingertips he scoffed. “This means nothing!” He snorted.
I smiled aware that this would not be enough to peel the skin from the onion or draw blood from the stone. “Carla.” I called without a tremble.
The corners of his lips fell to the ground his shifty gaze stuck to the floor. “What does this mean Samuel?” I asked pleasantly brandishing his indiscretion like a loaded weapon.
I waited a moment for his excuse, his valid reasons or even an apology but I knew it would never be enough. “Twenty years of marriage and you throw it all away for a woman younger than your marriage license.” I chuckled instead of crying.
“She meant nothing.”
Suddenly I felt elated, a breeze upon my face as my proverbial wings. He rose heavily his shoulders slumber and his eyes low. “She was a mistake.” He reasoned. “Samuel.” Carla whined her innocent feeling crushed.
Placing my hands upon his shoulders I pulled him close, relaxing his clasped my waist with urgency. “Samuel.” I whispered. ” You are the mistake!”

BROKEN HEARTS THAT SING….

Lovely, He kissed me under the moonlight

Gently rubbing, asking me for loving

Removing my underwear

He whispered sweet, sweet nothings

Just to show he cared

But all to soon he had what he wanted

And left without a care

Stolen,

Robbed

Broken sobs

Tired of fake loving

Others can’t get enough.

Swollen, heartbroken and all alone

No answer, just silence when I call your phone

Absconded, lost , your not coming home

Where, oh where has all that love gone.

One moment, a lifetime

To remember you by

But lost is true love I will never apply.

SPOKEN WORD: INSIDE

I often consoled myself in the dim glow of the street lights with fictional tales spawn from the imagination of a pubescent teen. I often wondered what it would like to be anybody; anybody but me.

Then came a growth I could have never foreseen a road of bumps and curves that wounded me. Leading to a light that never dimmed, I kept walking on a whim. In the distance I saw a future, a vision set in stone for me but not everything in plain sight was as it seemed.

I could have given up all hope, many times unable to cope. I could have thrown in the towel but God knew what tests he was giving me, he knew what I could handle. Throughout the hardest of times I found a strength I could not ignore. I found a power that lifted me from the floor.

Although the race is far from over and the road is never clear, I am still standing, I am still here.

Giving thanks to the higher power that guided me through and for the foes that formed weapons God lives you. Though you may not understand or care I am blessed because in my heart Jah lives here.

I could write my story and tell you a tale but each man on his own ship he sails. My pain will not be your pain just as my name is not your name. We may face similarities but we will never be the same.

So you may not have walked my path as I have not yours, I judge you not on your flaws. I drifted through life on a hope and prayer; but I’m still standing Im still here.

THE EX

Her heart shuddered and her breath stilled in the moment. Only a few feet away her eyes rested upon the once desired and beloved flesh. A body she had craved, admired and conquered in love and war she stills bore the scars of their battle.

There he stood in the mist of the crowd oblivious to her presence, lost in fruitless conversation. Charming his way through guest without a care in the world she watched as a gentle graze of the hand tickled a fair maiden as he greeted her enamoured blush with strong gaze and soothed her with his attentive nature.

Staitionary, abandoning reality, here she stood staring the past in the face unable to breathe. Her eyes met his and in an instant four long years since; since they had laid eyes on each other dissappeared in a blink of an eye. Every memory she had tried to erase rewritten in her mind; The kiss settling upon her lips as if he just lay then upon her; The heartache she felt when she walked away; The pain that exploded in her chest each time he lied; All inscribed again.

The ground sway beneath her as she caught her breath closing her eyes with a silent pray she wondered if he was only a figment of her imagination or a beautiful mirage deadly upon encounter.

A PIECE OF ART

INKED : Beautiful lines intricately drawn upon my skin each marking out the story I wish to tell.
Ecthes upon my flesh as smooth as felt
Contain the bleeding ink that is timeless
Living through any storm.
Unique to me and unable to confirm.
Each line delicately displaying each vision of strenght that remained unscathed.
Each one given its own name,
In memory of love or in memory of pain.
Each a reminder of how I overcame
Again and again……

BENEATH THE SUN

There was something about the morning sunrise that felt freeing. Although she had no experience of servitude Desire felt as if she had been held in captivity for her entire fifteen years of living. Wednesday morning was just like every other morning as she stuck rigid to routine and crept out of the back door, past the hog pen and out onto the dusty red lane. It was still dark outside but if she squinted hard enough she could just about see a ripple of the sea to her left and to her right the road that lead to the rest of the country she had been born in but never travelled. Grains of red dirt lathered her leather shoes covering them in a smooth red coat of dust that she would defiantly have to remove before school but this was worth the extra task. Halting just before the road turned to sand she removed her shoes and tied the two laces together, her toes wriggled in the sand as she stepped out the golden carpet hanging her shoes round her neck she strolled down the beach past the fish shack and up the small sand dune before resting on top. Within minutes the dark shade of night dissolved into and array of colours she could not name, as night turned to day her lips curled exposing her teeth to the the beauty of God. A mom All too soon nature had begun its morning song, animals stirred in their pens and not so far in the distance she heard a cockerel crow. Hurriedly she rose with one last look at the sun and a wish she only uttered to the moonlight. “One day.” She said with hope .”I will leave this land and explore the finer things in life.” .

ALL KINDS OF ❤ING

I had drifted across sands and sea, yet I had never envision such beauty as she. Standing in the eye of the sun , covered in natures gold she stole a part of my soul. Even though she didn’t know it or me there was some force pulling me closer. Never I imagined that love would find me on home ground after covering each ends of the earth but suddwnly there she was in the mist of the people who had discouraged my dreams and shattered my wishes.

There had never been anywhere far enough from dissapproving eyes and salty opinions yet back in the fold of the judge and jury something strange was happening. The air cooled as the crowd moved around her aura never disturbing the bulb magicalliy encasing her beauty she looked my way and the earth tremble.

Nudgung me forcefully my youngest sister frown deeply. “Are you ok you look as if you have seen a ghost.” She asked with grave concern.

Slapping her palm upon my brow as if she had a thermometer hand she sighed with relief.

To enamoured to speak I stumbled over my words “I..I.”

Unable to catch my breath speech had evaded my conciousness and love had swallowed my words.

“Let me get you some water.” Kizzy offered her warmth leaving my side, leaving me naked to discovery.

My eyes must have bore through her skin as she glanced my way so fleeting before returning to her conversation less disturbed by my presence than I hers. The thunder in my chest throbbed painfully as Kizzy shoved a glass of water in my hand with the order to ‘drink’. Gulping the clear liquid I hoped to ease the unusual magnet charge pulling my gaze to the wonderful Miss Samson and her quirky attire but I was too late.

A foot away she smiled sweetly letting her hand fall before me so gracefully I gratefully accepted.

“Tara, right.”

MOTHER LAND Part 2

It had been four summers and four birthdays since Desire had hatched her fairytale life out of the rumbles of red rock and everything had gone into high drive. The old beach hotel had been taken over by the Edgar family, a well to do white family from the cold streets of England. John Edgar was a heavy set man with a full white beard fattened with the finest meats. Bestie Edgar had married well although she too came from wealth she had been born on the island and was more accustmed to the ways of the people. Bestir had insisting on rerurning to her home lnd and erting her english children get feel for the island before the natives had ruined what was left of its beauty. Thier first born Jane had reserved herself to learning how to become a good wife and proper lady but John Edgar junior had taken to the land like a fish to water. Nothing had prepared him for the brown girl with copper colur hair and nine freckled placed spaciously across her nose. The breath she had stolen from him had never returned.

Once the hotel had be restored tourist trickled through the small comunity slowly increasing each year. At the edge of the land and beautiful view of the islands end The Edgar Family settled easily. The first whiff of Desire in the morning heat had tickled her pink and began a campaign of hatred so raw the compositions of buildings were affected. Desire had no qualms being the object of Besties Edgars disgust, she was going to marry John Edgar the second even if it killed her. It was such morning she walked the half a mile path to the Edgars verenda her news swirling inside her tummy. Bestie Edgar true to form turned her nose up to the air and tutted at the sight of Desire strolled up her path.

“Why must John insist on playing with the natives.” She remarked spitefully.

“Mama.” Jane interjected “Desire is like family.”

Bestie Edgar coughed hard. “Jane you and your brother are wildly accepting I mean, honestly are the animals are family too.” She chuckled.

Drumming up the courage Jane thought carefully anout her question before she asked her mother bravely.

“Mama why do you hate her so?” Jane asked thoughtfully.

“John deserves a Lady not a maid.”

“Mama Desire is not a Maid, she went to university an studied hard.”

“I bet some foolish man paid for her education.”

“Mama I can never understand whh you would come back home to isolation. People like Desire have hopes for a better a future.”

Bestie clasped her chest in shock.” I am not isolated. Desire is only after money and your brothers has falling head first for a demon.”

“Mama Desire loves John, he loves her isnt that all that matters.”

“Life is no fairytale Jane. Desire is a black woman incase you forgot.”

Jane pursed her lips and kept her next thought to herself. After all she would have never known if she hadn’t been snooping. If her mother was oblivious to the facts she would play along respectfully.

“Jane, what do you think of the island?.”

“I think its beautiful mama, magestic even. ”

Bestie laughed for the first time in weeks. ” I use to watch the water for boats, there was something about the sea.”

“I thought you grew up in the town.”

“I did.” Bestie replied quickly. ” but we use to come here often when we were children.”

“We!”

“Oh Jane, tnose days are long gone.” Bestie deflective.

Clearing her throat softly Desire announced her presence.

“Good afternoon Mrs Edgar is John available?”

“Not for the likes of you.” Mrs Edgar snapped.

“Mother apologise to Desire.” John snapped, his brows burrowed together as he frowned deeply.

Keeping her eyes firmly on the prize she stared at Desire, a sharp line where her lips should have been.

“I shall do no such thing!” She retorted. “This ‘gyal’ should know her place. I’ve put up with your little hobby for long enough its time you found a proper wife and stopped playing with the help.”she finished with a touch of venom.

Janes eyes darted from her mother to her brother awaiting his response. Passing his mother John Edgar junior took a stand beside his woman and faced his mother head on.

Smiling warmly he clasped her trembling hand and squeezed “Desire and I are to be married.” He revealed proudly.

Bestie stood abruptly “Over my dead body she screeched. “This has gone far enough.”

“So be it.”he replied. “Desire is with child and I love her.”

“It must be the sun.” Bestie whined. “No there is more to this!” Shaking her head she stepped towards Desire her hands raised. “You, you put voodo on my son. Yuh cast spell pon him.” Clasping her mouth before more of her mother tongue spilled out uncontrollably she backed up into the door frame.

Closing her eyes she inhaled and exhaled rapidly, Desire was everything she despised; her fake air and graces, her humble beginnings , her honey brown skin it was all the empitome of suffering. Tears rolled from her eyes as she shook angrily. Rising to comfort her mother Jane tried to calm her queitly.

“Desire is pregnant there is nothinh you can do about it, as soon as we are married we shall leave for England.”

Besties face changed color raidly as she processed her living nightmare. “Your father will not agree with this.”

“He has my blessing.” John Edgar Senoir annouced behind her.

Smiling sweetly Desire stepped forward. ” Should I call you Mother?” She asked innocently.

Falling freely Bestie landed in her husbands arms unconsciously the screams only existing her head.

THE MOTHER LAND Pt 1

There was something about the morning sunrise that felt freeing. Although she had no experience of servitude Desire felt as if she had been held in captivity all of her 15 years. Every morning she crept out of the back door, past the hog pen and out onto the dusty red lane. If she stood right there she could see the sea to her left and the road to the rest of the country she had been born in never travelled to her right.

Grains of red dirt lathered her leather shoes in a smooth red coat of dust that she would definatly have to remove before school but this was worth the extra task. Just before the road turned to sand she removed her shoes and tied the two laces together and hung them from her neck before stepping into the golden sand.

Within minutes the dark shades slowly dissovled watching as night turned to day she smiled admiring the beauty of God. Nature begun its morning song and the animals stirred in the pens across the lands. Far away a cockrel crowed signalling her time for departure. Sadly she gathered a palm full of sand and let it flow through her fingers

“One day.” She said with hope .” I will leave this land and walk amongst the richest gentry and fine ladies. They will call me Lady Desire and I shall have women who tend to my every need.” She gighled childishly as she imagined herself inside a fine house adorned in fine threads.

“How will you do that?” Thaddues sniggered.

Looking up at her interuption she frown deeply. In all the years she had been alive Thaddues had found some pleasure in reminding her that life wasn’t the fairytale she imagined.

“Why do you inist on creeping up on people Thaddues” she scolded. “I’m sure Miss Anderson has work for you to do.”

Grinning foolishly Thaddues wagged his finger in her direction and laughed. ” you dont worry about Mrs Anderson this is the fifth time Ive been removed from duty to find you.”

“Nobody asked you.”

“Well if your mother is nobody then I guess nobody did.”

Thaddues watched as her eyes slanted and her tan brown skin flushed red and rejoiced inwardly.

“Dont be smart it doesn’t fit a dummy like you.” She spat. “Soon I will leave this captured land and I will be courting with the Queen.”

Tutting Thaddues smiled “Your high dreams and ugly nature will only bring you misery you wait and see.” Kissing his teeth long and hard he kicked his feet in the sand as he cursed all the way back to dry land.

Thaddues Brown was two years older than her but not as smart. For the past year he worked at Mrs Andersons brown house as a helper. Mama Rose, Thaddues mother, had nine kids to feed and four goats not yet ready for their purpose. Thaddues was the eldest child and Mama Rose at least worked hard to send the three eldest to school while the others waited to learn from them but the school had done all they could. ‘Sone pickney just nuh book worthy” the teacher had offered and Mama Rose took that to the nearest work vacancy and pushed Thaddues into the world of work. All their fathers had left Thaddues was the only one they had ever know. Little Kevin wad happy now he was going to school and Thaddues felt like a man.

Years ago, his face had been the sun and his words as sweet as honey but the older they got and the more proverty she saw the less of a catch Thaddues seemed. Although, he was still handsome his prospects were as dim as his brain and there was no way she would end up bare foot and ‘bruk’ like Mama Rose. Rising she dusted the sand from her sun dress and begun the short walk home, Papa had left for sea earlier and Mama would just be stirring a hot pot of cornmeal porridge. Passing the old hotel she notice the sale sign had dissappeared and wondered who had brought the old building and would they have a family. Passing four more houses she opened the gate at the fifth and side stepped the old mongrel grazing in the morning heat.

“Morning Mama.”

Junnie pushed the wood into the fire and continued to stir.

“I said morning Mama.”

“Me hear yuh.” Junnie snapped, placing the lid on the pot she rose and placed her hand on her hips. “T’ree marning straight I wake an yuh nuh dehyah.”

“I was at the beach Mama.” Desire whined.

“I know I sent Thaddues to fine yuh.” Sighing wearily Junnie hobbled over to the steps and sat down. “Mi to old fi chase yuh Desire but I want you to know what ever sweet nanny goat run him belly.”

Desire frowned deeply trying to process her mothers parable with little understanding.

“Go get ready for school, with all your foriegn dream I sure of one t’ing foriegn don’t want no dunce.”

Skipping indoors Desire traded her sun dress for her freshly starch uniform and rubbed her shoe vigoirously until they shined like new. Brushing her hair into a neat bun she placed her sun hat atop her head and admired her reflection. Only she wasn’t wearing her uniform she was dressed in lace and covered in pearls.

“Stop idle and move.” Junnie scolded

“Yes Mama.”

A hot bowl of porridge and fresh cocoa tea later she began her walk to school. The three miles it took was shorter with company, but she was late. Every morning she prided herslef on being ready and prepared for the term. School was her way out of this small island, she had bigger ideas and greater plans. Very few people from her parish could go to school so her high fourrune was and elevation she readly excepted without grace. Many of the children hated her and favoured her brother more but she didn’t let that bother her. Wesley was a no hoper with no ambition who wanted to follow in their fathers footsteps. The idea of being like her mother appalled her. Spotting her friends Nancy Clarke and Romaine Dawson not too far ahead she sped up her pace.

“Wait for me nuh.”

After a few yells she finally got their attention and caught up.

“Your late.”

“Thank you Nancy.” Desire replied.

“Easy Nancy we only just reach.” Romaine offered in peace before all three burst into laughter. ” Nancy deciede she wants to go to America, did you pick?”

Clasping her hands together Desire grinned broadly “As soon as I can afford it I will be leaving Jamaica.” Desire announced proudly. ” and heading for England.”
