Pressing the third floor, she let the doors shut behind her, only they didn’t close. “You call me?” “I didn’t expect you to come so quickly.” “That’s what I do for family.” “So what do you want from me?” “You called me, remember?” She did remember, but now she wished she hadn’t. It was impulsive, risky even. There was something lingering beneath the deepest spot in his eyes, and it scared her. “He did that to my mother.” He said nothing, and, in an instant, she knew she was the only one in the dark. .
“That’s not the only reason you called me.”
. “No, it isn’t.” She gushed. .
The lift shuddered, and the doors opened as passengers loaded into the metal cage. Chatter that sounded like nattering birds continued three floors up until they were alone again, his eyes boring into hers.
